BRICK + MORTAR: THE NEXT SANTA MONICA HOT SPOT

Tucked away, off charming Main Street in Santa Monica, is a hot new restaurant serving modern American cuisine in an indoor/outdoor setting. Brick+Mortar occupies the space of the former Salute wine bar. The set-up and décor is first-date-worthy and the vibe is relaxed with a little energy mixed in. The crowd is lively and fairly described as hip. The bar is prominently featured, and with good cause -- this is a gastropub. And a good one, at that, thanks largely to Executive Chef Laurent Saussy.

HAPPY HOUR AT BRICK + MORTAR IN SANTA MONICA

The new hot spot on Main Street in Santa Monica is Brick+Mortar located in the Frank Geary designed Edgemar building. Elegant, lean, simple and relaxing, Brick+Mortar hit the ground running when it opened in January of 2012. Formerly Salute Wine Bar, the new owners (BRG Group) re-modeled the entire restaurant in eight days and immediately were rewarded with a flood of clientele. This is a great neighborhood gastro pub that serves five-star food at three-star prices.

BRICK + MORTAR MAKES ITS HOME ON MAIN STREET

It’s hard to find Brick+Mortar; so the packed tables must mean good food.

Located on Main Street in Santa Monica, behind Ben & Jerry’s, the gastropub is adjacent to the Edgemar Center for the Arts. The two hidden spots rely on word-of-mouth and advertising for business. Keeping customers, however, is another story. Brick+Mortar does not seem to be having problems with repeat business.

8 MUST-TRY SAVORY PIES  IN LOS ANGELES

The cupcake craze in LA seems to have given way to pies, but not so much the apple pie that mom used to make. Rather, it’s savory meat pies that are turning up on menus everywhere from Downtown to the Westside. In fact, when Karen and Quinn Hatfield open their new Sycamore Kitchen this spring, they’ll be offering a sausage-fennel pie and also a sweet potato, roasted onion and goat cheese crostata. Can’t wait? Here are eight dinner-ready pies to dig into right now.

NOW I'M HUNGRY

BRICK+MORTAR: A STRONG FOUNDATION

Main Street, Santa Monica is not hurting for places to eat and drink. From the bustling celeb-spotting Urth Café southward to the sushi firehouse (which might be over the Venice border), there are almost more restaurants and bars than anything else. However, they do tend to separate into two camps: old school casual or upscale trendy. So a no-nonsense gastropub splitting the difference with reasonable pricing is a welcome addition–obviously, judging by the fact that the new Brick+Mortar is already plenty busy.

JETSET EXTRA

SANTA MONICA, CA, USA: BRICK + MORTAR

I’ve generally found that any restaurant that nails the bread will exceed expectations for the rest of the meal, and Santa Monica’s Brick + Mortar was no exception. The space, with its (no surprise) exposed brick walls, felt both hip and cozy. The fact that large-screen TVs are also broadcasting sports games from the dining room walls belies the superbly elevated pub fare on Executive Chef Laurent Saussy’s menu. The aforementioned warm, crusty baguette accompanied by butter sprinkled with sea salt and cracked pepper definitely started the meal on a high note.
